Deregistering UAE Tax When Leaving

How to deregister UAE corporate tax and VAT when leaving: final returns, EmaraTax deregistration steps, timelines and penalties to avoid.

deregister uae tax when leaving

Deregister UAE tax registrations through the FTA's EmaraTax portal before or when you leave. Corporate tax registrations require a final return covering the period up to deregistration; VAT registrations require a final VAT return, cancellation of the registration, and settlement of any liability or refund. File early: deregistration takes weeks to process, and open registrations keep generating filing obligations and penalties after you have gone.

FTA practice

# The deregistration sequence

Work through your registrations one at a time, in this order. First, list every FTA registration you hold: corporate tax, VAT, and any excise or other registrations. Many people forget registrations opened for a side activity years ago, so check your EmaraTax dashboard rather than relying on memory. Second, bring each registration up to date: file any overdue returns and pay any balances, because the FTA will not deregister a file with outstanding returns. Third, prepare the final return for each tax covering the period up to your deregistration date. For corporate tax this means the final tax period; for VAT it means the final tax period with any deregistration adjustments on stock and assets. Fourth, submit the deregistration or cancellation application through EmaraTax with the supporting documents the form requests. Fifth, wait for the FTA's confirmation and keep the deregistration letter. Do not treat the application's submission as the end; only the FTA's confirmation closes the file.

# Mistakes that keep registrations alive

Deregistration is where departing registrants most often go wrong. The classic mistake is leaving the country with returns still due and assuming distance ends the obligation; it does not, and penalties for late filing and late payment accrue on open registrations regardless of where you live. Another mistake is deregistering the VAT registration but forgetting the corporate tax registration, or vice versa, because the two live in different parts of EmaraTax. A third is filing the final return but never submitting the deregistration application, which leaves the registration live and the next return due. Start the process at least a month before departure: FTA processing takes weeks, queries are common, and you want the confirmation letter in hand before your visa is cancelled and your EmaraTax access becomes harder to manage.

Already left? Fix it remotely

If you have already left with registrations open, act now rather than hoping they lapse. Log in to EmaraTax, file the overdue returns, pay the balances, and submit the deregistration applications. Every month of delay adds potential penalties.

# After deregistration: the paper trail

Keep the full file after deregistration: the final returns, the deregistration applications, the FTA's confirmation letters, and proof of every payment. The FTA's record-keeping expectations run for years after a deregistration, and a confirmation letter is your only proof the file is closed if the authority ever queries it. Keep bank statements covering the final periods as well, because they corroborate the figures in the final returns. Store everything for at least five years, and keep digital copies in two places. If your destination country's tax authority asks about your UAE years, this file answers their questions.

Guard the confirmation letter

The deregistration confirmation letter is the single most important document of your exit. Without it, you cannot prove the registration is closed. Save it as a PDF, email it to yourself, and keep a printed copy with your other permanent records.

Voluntary vs mandatory deregistration

Deregistration is mandatory when you stop making taxable supplies or fall below the thresholds without expectation of recovery; it is voluntary in a wind-down where you choose to close early. The distinction matters for timing: mandatory deregistration has a deadline measured from the event, while voluntary deregistration is scheduled at your convenience. Get the classification right, because late mandatory deregistration attracts the same penalty logic as late registration — the FTA treats exits with the same seriousness as entries.

Re-registration if you return

Deregistration is not a ban. If you return to the UAE and restart taxable activity, you register again — usually with a new TRN, since the old registration was closed. Keep the old deregistration file; it proves the earlier period was properly closed and prevents the new registration from inheriting old liabilities. Serial entrepreneurs who deregister and re-register cleanly each cycle have the simplest audit history of all.

FAQ Answers to the questions people actually ask

Frequently asked questions

Does cancelling my visa automatically deregister my tax registrations?

No. The visa is immigration; the tax registration is with the FTA. Cancelling your residence visa does not deregister your corporate tax or VAT registration. You must deregister separately through EmaraTax, or the registrations stay live.

What is the corporate tax deregistration process?

File the final return for the period up to the deregistration date, then submit the deregistration application with the supporting documents. The FTA reviews the file and confirms deregistration; keep the confirmation letter as proof.

What is the VAT deregistration process?

Submit a final VAT return for the last tax period, apply to cancel the registration, and settle any tax due or claim any refund. Stock on hand and assets may need VAT adjustments on deregistration, so check the VAT rules before filing.

Can penalties accrue after I leave the UAE?

Yes, and they accumulate while you are unaware. Late filing and late payment penalties continue on open registrations, and the FTA can assess them years later. Deregistering promptly is the cheapest option.
