# The Annual Anchors: Corporate Tax
For a calendar-year freelancer, the corporate tax year is 1 January to 31 December, and the return plus any tax payable are due within nine months — 30 September. Build internal milestones ahead of it: books closed and reconciled by end of February, draft return reviewed by August, filed and paid in September with room to spare. If Small Business Relief applies, the election is made in that same return — there is no separate relief deadline. Miss 30 September and late-filing penalties start; the return is due even for nil or loss years once you are registered. Newly registered freelancers: your first tax period may be a stub year, but the nine-month rule still runs from its end.
Diary the 20-day change notifications too
Material changes — new licence, new address, ceasing activity — must be notified to the FTA within 20 business days via EmaraTax. These rolling deadlines are the ones busy freelancers most often miss.
# The Quarterly Cycle: VAT Returns
VAT-registered freelancers usually file quarterly: periods ending 31 March, 30 June, 30 September, and 31 December, with each return and payment due 28 days after the period end. That gives four hard dates a year — 28 April, 28 July, 28 October, 28 January — each requiring output VAT computed, input VAT reconciled, and the net paid. The FTA can assign monthly or other periods, so confirm yours in the registration approval rather than assuming quarterly. Late VAT filing and late VAT payment carry separate penalties that compound, so treat the 28th as immovable: prepare the return in the first two weeks after quarter-end, review in week three, file and pay in week four.
| Quarter ends | Return and payment due |
|---|---|
| 31 March | 28 April |
| 30 June | 28 July |
| 30 September | 28 October |
| 31 December | 28 January |
# The Rolling Clocks: 20 Days and 40 Days
Two clocks run on events, not on the calendar — and confusing them is a classic error. Twenty business days: the deadline to register once liable for corporate tax or VAT, to notify the FTA of material changes including cessation, and to submit a voluntary disclosure after discovering a return error. Forty business days: the window to request reconsideration of an FTA decision such as a penalty assessment, running from the notification date. Business days exclude weekends and UAE public holidays — count on a calendar, not in your head. When either clock starts, diary the deadline immediately and work backwards; both are short enough that 'next week' becomes 'late' with one distraction.
# The Monthly Rhythm That Prevents All of It
Deadlines are met by routine, not by heroics. Monthly, on a fixed date: reconcile every account, total turnover for the threshold tests (AED 1 million corporate tax; AED 375,000/187,500 VAT), run the 30-day VAT forward test, and file receipts. Quarterly: prepare the VAT return from reconciled books, review the year's trajectory against thresholds, and back up the archive. Annually: close the year by February, review the return by August, file by 30 September, and do tax planning in December. Add one yearly task most freelancers skip — a 30-minute engagement with the calendar itself each January, confirming every deadline above is diarised with reminders two weeks out. The freelancers who never pay penalties are not more disciplined people; they are people with a better calendar.
Automate the reminders
Put every deadline in a real calendar with two alerts — fourteen days and three days before. The fourteen-day alert starts the work; the three-day alert catches what slipped. Free, simple, and the highest-ROI tax control a freelancer can implement.

Frequently asked questions
What happens if a deadline falls on a public holiday?
Portal deadlines are generally as stated; do not assume an extension — file before the holiday. For the business-day clocks, holidays are excluded from the count by definition, which the 20/40-day rules already handle.
I registered for VAT mid-quarter. When is my first return due?
Your registration approval specifies your tax periods and first return date. Check the approval notice in EmaraTax rather than assuming the standard quarterly cycle — the first period is often a stub.
Are the corporate tax and VAT deadlines ever the same day?
They can coincide in late September/October — the 30 September corporate tax deadline sits near the quarterly VAT cycle. Plan September as your heaviest compliance month and start both workstreams in August.
Do deadlines change if I use a tax agent?
No — the statutory deadlines are yours regardless of who prepares the filings. An agent helps you meet them; they do not move them. Confirm your agent's internal deadlines are comfortably ahead of the statutory ones.
