Other comprehensive income explained for UAE businesses: what it means, how it works in your books, and the mistakes to avoid.

# Other comprehensive income: what matters most
OCI: gains and losses bypassing the P&L — revaluations, FX translation, certain fair-value moves — recycled or not per the standard. UAE groups with foreign operations or revalued assets: OCI is where the non-P&L movements live, and the statement must show them.
In practice, this concept shows up in specific bookkeeping actions. The points below translate the definition into what to do: the entries, the reconciliations, the reviews, and the documentation that make the concept real in a working ledger — rather than a textbook paragraph that never touches the books. Revisit the concept whenever the business changes in a way that touches it: treatments that were correct last year can be wrong this year.
Key points
- Classify each OCI item per the standard
- Recycling: some items reclassify to P&L later, some never
- Present OCI distinctly from profit or loss
# Getting other comprehensive income right
The UAE angle matters because local law sets the frame: record-keeping duties under the Tax Procedures Law, VAT treatment under the VAT legislation, corporate tax implications under FDL 47/2022. Apply the concept inside that frame and the books satisfy both management and compliance at once. Keep the treatment documented with its reasoning: next period's preparer — or next year's auditor — needs to follow it.

- Present OCI distinctly from profit or loss

Putting it into practice
Apply it this month: identify where the concept touches your books, post or correct the relevant entries, and reconcile the affected accounts. Document the treatment and the reasoning so next period's preparer follows it. If the amounts are material or the treatment debatable, get the position reviewed before filing anything that depends on it — the VAT return, the financial statements, or the corporate tax return. Revisit the concept whenever the business changes in a way that touches it; treatments that were right for last year's business can be wrong for this year's.
# Avoiding mistakes with other comprehensive income
Where businesses go wrong with this concept, the pattern is consistent: either ignoring it (and discovering the gap at audit) or applying it ritualistically (and missing its purpose). The middle path — understanding the why, then implementing the how proportionately — is what the disciplines above describe. The common thread is the confident misapplication: the concept understood well enough to use, but not well enough to use correctly.

Frequently asked questions
Why bypass the P&L?
Because these items are not operating performance: FX translation of a subsidiary, a property revaluation. Including them in profit would distort the performance story; OCI keeps them visible but separate. Total comprehensive income is the complete picture. Review the resulting reports monthly and act on the variances: bookkeeping that nobody reads is archaeology, not management.
What is recycling?
Moving an OCI item to the P&L when realised — e.g. FX translation on disposing the subsidiary. Some items recycle, some (like certain revaluations) never do. The standard specifies per item; the statement must track it. Reconcile before you report, and report before you lock: the sequence is the control, and a locked period is a promise the numbers were checked.
What is the difference between bookkeeping and accounting?
Bookkeeping is the daily discipline: recording transactions, reconciling banks, coding invoices, and keeping the ledger clean. Accounting builds on it: financial statements, management analysis, tax computations, and audit support. You cannot have reliable accounting without reliable bookkeeping — every tax return and every audit starts from the ledger.
Does my UAE business need to keep books if it is not VAT registered?
Yes. Record-keeping duties under the Tax Procedures Law and the Commercial Companies Law apply regardless of VAT registration, and corporate tax record duties apply to taxable persons. VAT registration only adds a second layer of invoice and retention rules. An unregistered business still needs a defensible ledger for corporate tax, audits, and any future FTA enquiry.
What records does the FTA expect to see behind a set of books?
The Executive Regulation of the Tax Procedures Law lists accounting records and commercial books that must reflect the true position of the business: ledgers, journals, invoices issued and received, contracts, bank statements, and supporting documents. Electronic records are acceptable if they remain accessible and unaltered. Missing source documents are the most common reason books fail an FTA review.
