Changing Your Corporate Tax Period in the UAE
Changing your UAE corporate tax period needs FTA approval and proper justification. Learn the conditions, process and effect on filing deadlines.
change corporate tax period uae
Your corporate tax period follows your financial year, and changing it requires the FTA's approval; it is not a simple admin edit on EmaraTax. Apply through the portal with the board resolution changing the financial year and a clear business justification, such as alignment with a new parent company's year end. The FTA approves genuine commercial reasons and rejects changes aimed at gaining a tax advantage.
Basis: UAE Ministry of Finance
- Legal basis
- The tax period is the financial year or part thereof; changes require FTA approval
- Test
- The FTA considers the commercial justification and whether a tax advantage is sought
- Transition effect
- A change typically creates a short tax period with its own filing deadline

# Why the tax period is not freely changeable
Article 57 ties the tax period to the financial year: twelve months on the Gregorian calendar, or the relevant part of it where the rules provide for shorter periods. Because the period defines when returns are due and which reliefs apply, letting businesses move it at will would let them engineer filing deadlines and straddle rate or relief changes. The approval requirement is the guardrail.
Legitimate reasons arise regularly in real business: a UAE company acquired by a group with a different year end, a change of accounting standards, or alignment with a new auditor's requirements. The FTA distinguishes these commercial drivers from tax-motivated ones. An application framed honestly around the business reason, with board-level evidence, is the one that succeeds.
# The approval process on EmaraTax
Apply through the corporate tax account on EmaraTax, requesting the change of tax period and attaching the board resolution that changes the financial year, the commercial justification, and the proposed new period dates. Explain what the transition year will look like, including any short period, and confirm that the change is not sought to obtain a tax advantage.
The FTA reviews the justification and may ask for further information, such as group structure charts where alignment with a parent is the reason. Track the application on the dashboard and do not assume approval from silence. Once approved, verify the new tax periods shown on the dashboard and rebuild your compliance calendar from them.

# Short periods and deadline traps in the transition
Moving the year end almost always creates a short tax period: the stub between the old year end and the new one. A short period is a tax period in its own right, with its own return due within nine months of its end. Businesses routinely miss this return because they are focused on the new full year, and the late filing penalty then accrues on a period they barely noticed.
Check also whether reliefs and thresholds apply pro-rata or in full to the short period, and whether the change affects any elections tied to tax periods, such as small business relief. Map the entire transition on a timeline before applying, so the approval lands on a compliance plan rather than a surprise.
| Period | Dates | Return due |
|---|---|---|
| Last old period | 1 Jan – 31 Dec | 30 Sep next year |
| Short period | 1 Jan – 30 Jun | 31 Mar next year |
| First new period | 1 Jul – 30 Jun | 31 Mar following year |
# Staying on the right side of the anti-avoidance rules
A tax period change with a genuine commercial reason is unobjectionable, but the general anti-abuse rule in Article 50 applies to arrangements with a main purpose of obtaining a tax advantage. A year-end change timed to straddle a rate change, to fragment a large gain across periods, or to manufacture a short period for a relief claim invites scrutiny under the rule. The FTA looks at purpose, and contemporaneous documents reveal it.
Keep the commercial file clean: board minutes recording the business reason, group correspondence about the alignment need, and no mention of tax benefits as a driver. Where a tax effect is incidental to a genuine commercial change, that is the honest position to state. Where the tax effect is the driver, do not proceed without specialist advice, because the approval may be refused and the arrangement challenged.
Documenting commercial purpose
The board minute is the key document: it should record the commercial reason, the alternatives considered, and the decision, dated before the application. Documents created after the fact to justify the change carry little weight.
Genuine vs engineered timing
Aligning with a new parent's year end after an acquisition is genuine. Moving the year end repeatedly to optimise each period's outcome is engineered. The pattern over time matters as much as the single change.

Frequently asked questions
Can I change my tax period every year?
In practice, no. The FTA approves changes with genuine commercial justification, and repeated changes would fail that test and look like deadline engineering. Choose a financial year you can live with long term, and treat a change as an exceptional event tied to a real business reason.
Will the FTA reject a change that saves tax?
A change whose main purpose is to obtain a tax advantage is liable to be rejected, and the general anti-abuse rule can apply to arrangements with a tax avoidance purpose. If the commercial reason is genuine and any tax effect is incidental, say so plainly and evidence the commercial driver.
What if my parent company changes its year end?
Group alignment is one of the strongest justifications for a change. Provide the group structure, the parent's new year end with evidence, and an explanation of why alignment matters for consolidation and audit. This is routinely approved where the documentation is complete.
