The GIBAN: UAE Corporate Tax Payment Reference Explained

The GIBAN is the FTA's payment reference for UAE corporate tax. Learn where to find it on EmaraTax and how to use it correctly.

The GIBAN is the unique IBAN-style payment reference the FTA generates for tax payments, shown on EmaraTax against the liability. Using it on the bank transfer tells the FTA exactly which taxable person and which liability the money settles, enabling correct allocation. Always copy the GIBAN exactly as displayed for the specific tax period being paid; a wrong or missing reference leaves the payment unallocated while the liability shows as overdue.

# What the GIBAN does

The FTA receives thousands of payments daily across taxes and taxpayers. The GIBAN is how your transfer is identified: it encodes the routing the Authority's systems need to match the money to your corporate tax account and the specific period's liability. Without it, or with it mistyped, the payment arrives as an unidentified credit that the system cannot allocate.

Each liability can have its own reference treatment, so generate the GIBAN fresh for the payment you are making rather than reusing an old one from a previous period. The portal shows the reference alongside the liability details; that pairing is what guarantees the allocation works.

GIBAN vs TRN

The TRN identifies you as a taxpayer; the GIBAN identifies the specific payment. Both matter, but the GIBAN is what the bank transfer carries. Do not put the TRN in the reference field where the GIBAN is required.

# Using the GIBAN correctly

On EmaraTax, open the corporate tax liability for the exact tax period, note the amount due, and copy the GIBAN precisely. In your bank's transfer instruction, paste the reference into the designated reference field without adding extra text, spaces or punctuation that could corrupt it. Instruct the transfer for the exact liability amount.

After the value date, return to EmaraTax and confirm the payment shows against the correct period. Allow the normal banking and allocation processing time, but do not allow indefinite time: if the payment has not allocated within the expected window, investigate with the bank confirmation showing the reference as instructed. Catching an unallocated payment early is a quick fix; discovering it after penalties accrued is not.

# When the reference goes wrong

A mistyped GIBAN typically produces an unallocated payment: the money left your account, the liability still shows overdue, and penalties start running. The fix is to contact the FTA with the bank confirmation proving the transfer, the reference as instructed, and the intended liability, and request manual allocation. Keep every document; the paper trail is what gets the payment matched.

Preventing this is cheaper than fixing it: copy-paste rather than retype, have a second person verify the reference on large payments, and confirm allocation on the dashboard as a standard post-payment step. Build the verification into the payment procedure so no payment is ever considered done until the dashboard agrees.

# References for penalties and assessments

The GIBAN discipline applies beyond the annual liability: penalty payments, assessment payments and voluntary disclosure payments each need correct references to allocate properly. When paying an assessed amount, use the reference shown against the assessment on the portal, not the original period's GIBAN, unless the portal directs otherwise. A penalty paid against the wrong reference leaves the penalty outstanding while a credit sits elsewhere, and the enforcement process does not pause for misallocation.

Where several amounts are due at once, such as tax plus penalties for a period, check whether the portal expects separate payments with separate references or a single payment with a combined reference. Follow the portal's structure exactly; improvising a combined payment where separate references were expected is a reliable way to create an allocation mess that takes weeks to untangle.

Assessment payment verification

After paying an assessment, verify the assessment balance specifically, not just the overall account balance. Assessments can sit in a different ledger view from the period liabilities.

Keeping the payment register

Log every tax payment: date, amount, reference used, intended liability, and the dashboard verification. The register is the first document reached for in any payment dispute.

FAQ Answers to the questions people actually ask

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly do I find the GIBAN on EmaraTax?

In the corporate tax account's payment or liability section, against the specific period's liability. The portal displays the payment details including the reference when you select the liability to pay. If you cannot locate it, check the FTA's payment guidance or ask your tax agent before instructing the transfer.

My bank asks for a beneficiary name. What do I enter?

Follow the beneficiary details shown alongside the GIBAN on EmaraTax, which identify the FTA as the recipient. Enter them exactly as displayed; the reference does the identification work, but the beneficiary details must also be correct for the transfer to process.

How long does allocation take after payment?

Allow the normal interbank processing plus the FTA's allocation cycle. Verify on the dashboard within a few working days. If the payment has not allocated within a reasonable window, raise it with the bank confirmation in hand rather than waiting.

I lost the GIBAN I used. Does it matter?

Keep the bank confirmation showing the reference as instructed; that is the proof of the payment instruction. For future payments, always generate the reference fresh on the portal rather than reusing old ones. The payment register should record every reference used, so nothing depends on memory.
