Corporate Tax Payment Deadlines in the UAE
When UAE corporate tax must be paid: the 9-month deadline, the 20-business-day rules for disclosures and assessments, and what late payment costs.
corporate tax payment deadline uae
Corporate tax is generally payable within nine months of the end of the tax period, together with the tax return. Tax arising under a voluntary disclosure is payable within 20 business days of submission, and tax under a tax assessment within 20 business days of receipt. Missing any of these dates triggers the 14 percent per annum late payment penalty from the next day.

# The three payment deadlines
Corporate tax has three payment deadlines, not one, and each belongs to a different situation. The ordinary deadline applies to the tax shown on the return: nine months from the end of the relevant tax period, the same date the return is due. For a December year-end company, that is 30 September of the following year.
The second deadline applies to additional tax arising under a voluntary disclosure: 20 business days from the date the disclosure is submitted. The third applies to tax under a tax assessment: 20 business days from the date the assessment is received. Both are set by item 8(2) of the penalty table, which redefines the due date for late payment purposes in exactly these two cases.
All three deadlines are measured in the way the underlying instrument measures them. The nine-month deadline is calendar months; the 20-business-day windows exclude weekends and UAE public holidays. Confusing the two counting conventions is a reliable way to miss a deadline you thought you understood.
| Situation | Deadline | Counted as |
|---|---|---|
| Tax per the return | 9 months from end of tax period | Calendar months |
| Tax per voluntary disclosure | 20 business days from submission | Business days |
| Tax per assessment | 20 business days from receipt | Business days |
# How to pay, and how to make sure the payment counts
Payments are made through EmaraTax, which offers the FTA's approved payment channels. The critical administrative step is Article 9(1) of the Tax Procedures Law: when paying, specify the type of tax and the tax period the payment relates to. A payment that arrives without that specification can be allocated by the Authority under Article 9(2), potentially against a different period or liability than you intended, leaving the intended one still accruing item 8.
Keep the payment receipts and reconcile them against the EmaraTax ledger. Portal payments occasionally misallocate or post late, and the ledger is the Authority's record of what you owe; a receipt without a matching ledger entry is a dispute waiting to happen. Where you hold a credit balance from an overpayment, Article 9(3) allows the Authority to allocate it against liabilities, within five years of the relevant period end.
For groups and businesses with multiple entities, pay per entity and per period. A single lump sum across entities without allocation invites the Article 9(2) problem at scale.
# What happens when a deadline is missed
The day after any of the three deadlines, item 8 starts: 14 percent per annum, monthly, on the unsettled tax. There is no grace period beyond the deadlines themselves and no de minimis. The charge runs until the tax is settled in full, with part payments reducing the base for subsequent months.
Missing the deadline also has procedural consequences beyond the money. Unpaid tax can trigger the Authority's collection measures under the Tax Procedures Law, and persistent non-payment sits badly in any later waiver or instalment application. The Authority distinguishes between businesses that cannot pay and businesses that do not bother; the paperwork for the former is the instalment application under Article 50.
If cash flow makes a deadline unmeetable, the order of operations is: pay what you can before the deadline, apply for an instalment arrangement for the rest, and keep the Authority informed. Silence plus non-payment is the combination that turns a cash-flow problem into an enforcement problem.
-
Diarise all three deadline types
Nine-month return deadline per entity, plus 20-business-day windows for any disclosure or assessment.
-
Schedule payments a few days early
Bank processing and portal posting take time; the deadline is receipt by the Authority, not initiation by you.
-
Specify tax type and period on payment
Article 9(1) compliance keeps the payment on the intended liability.
-
Reconcile receipts against the ledger
Confirm every payment posted to the right period before assuming a deadline was met.

Frequently asked questions
When is UAE corporate tax payable?
Generally within nine months of the end of the tax period, together with the tax return. Tax arising under a voluntary disclosure is payable within 20 business days of submission, and tax under an assessment within 20 business days of receipt. Late payment on any of these triggers 14 percent per annum from the next day.
How do I pay corporate tax in the UAE?
Through EmaraTax using the FTA's approved payment channels. Always specify the tax type and the tax period as Article 9(1) of the Tax Procedures Law requires, keep the receipts, and reconcile them against the EmaraTax ledger to confirm correct allocation.
What happens if I cannot pay corporate tax on time?
The 14 percent per annum late payment penalty starts the day after the deadline. Pay as much as you can, since part payments reduce the base, and apply for an instalment arrangement under Article 50 of the Tax Procedures Law rather than defaulting silently.
