The Natural Person Corporate Tax Return in the UAE

Inside the UAE corporate tax return for natural persons: what it asks, how to complete it on EmaraTax, elections, and the filing deadline.

natural person corporate tax return uae

The natural person corporate tax return is filed on EmaraTax for each calendar-year tax period, reporting business revenue, deductible expenses, adjustments, and taxable income, with the 0%/9% rates applied and relief elections — including Small Business Relief — made on the return itself. It is due within nine months of the period end: 30 September for calendar-year filers. Even with zero tax due, the return must be filed. Amendments are made through EmaraTax if errors are found.

# What the return asks for

The return walks through the computation: business revenue for the period, deductible expenses by category, adjustments for non-deductible items, resulting taxable income, the rate application, relief elections, and the final tax due. Each line should trace to your workings and records.

It also captures taxpayer information: TRN, tax period, business activities, and contact details. Keep these current — the FTA uses the registered details for all correspondence, and an outdated email means missed deadlines.

Supporting schedules may be required for complex positions: related-party transactions, loss carry-forwards, restructuring relief claims. Simple freelancer returns are straightforward; layered positions need layered disclosure. Disclose fully — the return is a legal declaration.

# Completing it accurately: the workflow

Prepare offline first: the closed year's revenue total, expense categories, adjustment list, and relief eligibility — all reconciled to bank statements and records. The portal entry should be transcription, not computation.

Enter the figures section by section, making elections deliberately — Small Business Relief ticked only after confirming the revenue test, each election verified on the submission summary. Elections made in error are difficult to unwind.

Review against the workings line by line before submitting: a transposed digit on revenue becomes your declared position. Submit, save the acknowledgement with the year's file, and diary payment — filing and payment share the deadline but are separate acts.

  1. Prepare the workings offline

Revenue, expenses, adjustments, and relief checks completed and reconciled before opening the portal.

  2. Enter and elect

Transcribe figures into EmaraTax; make each relief election deliberately and verify it on the summary.

  3. Review and submit

Check every line against the workings, submit, and save the acknowledgement.

  4. Pay by the deadline

Settle any tax due through the FTA's payment channels by the nine-month deadline.

# Elections and disclosures on the return

Small Business Relief is the election most natural persons make — tick it only when the revenue test is met for the period and the history, and keep the revenue workings proving it. The election replaces the tax computation with zero taxable income.

Other elections and claims — loss relief positions, restructuring relief, any special treatments — each have their own fields and conditions. Claim only what the facts support, and keep the supporting analysis with the return file.

Disclosure is protective: where a position is arguable — a novel apportionment, a borderline classification — disclosing the basis on or with the return shows good faith. Hidden aggressive positions become penalty multipliers when found; disclosed reasoned positions become discussions.

# After submission: payment, records, and queries

Pay any tax due by the deadline through the accepted channels and keep the receipt with the acknowledgement. A filed-but-unpaid return still accrues late-payment penalties — the job is done when both filing and payment are complete.

Archive the year's file: workings, records, submitted return copy, acknowledgement, payment receipt. This is the closed year — retained for the full retention period, available if the FTA queries.

If the FTA queries the return, respond through the proper channel with the workings and records, within the given timeframe. Most queries are resolved with documents, not arguments — the file you archived is the answer. Engage an adviser if the query escalates beyond a straightforward information request.

# Amending and late filing

Errors discovered after filing are corrected by amendment through EmaraTax — voluntary correction before the FTA finds the issue is treated far more leniently. Amend promptly, pay any additional tax with the amendment, and keep original and amended workings together.

Late filing attracts penalties under Cabinet Decision No. 75 of 2023 even when no tax is due — the obligation is to file, not just to pay. A late zero-tax return still penalises.

If a prior year was never filed, file it now for the correct period. Voluntary late compliance stops the accumulation and demonstrates good faith; waiting for the FTA to assess you surrenders both the narrative and the numbers.

FAQ Answers to the questions people actually ask

Frequently asked questions

Do I file if my tax due is zero?

Yes — absolutely. The filing obligation exists regardless of the tax due, and Small Business Relief is claimed by filing. Late filing of a zero-tax return still attracts penalties. File every year you are registered, on time, even when nothing is owed.

What is the deadline for the 2026 return?

Within nine months of the tax period end. For a natural person on the calendar year, the 2026 return and any payment are due by 30 September 2027. Confirm the current published deadlines on tax.gov.ae and diary both filing and payment.

Can I amend after submitting?

Yes, through EmaraTax. Correct errors as soon as found, pay any extra tax promptly, and document what changed and why. Voluntary amendment before any FTA query is the lowest-penalty path to a correct position.

What records must I keep with the return?

Everything behind the figures: revenue records, expense receipts, adjustment workings, relief eligibility evidence, the submitted return copy, acknowledgement, and payment receipt — organised by tax period and retained for the full retention period.

I missed last year's filing. What should I do?

File it immediately through EmaraTax for the correct period, pay any tax due, and expect late-filing and late-payment penalties. Voluntary compliance now is far cheaper than an FTA assessment later — and file this year's return on time to stop the pattern.
