How Natural Persons Calculate Taxable Income in the UAE

How individuals compute UAE corporate taxable income: revenue, deductible expenses, adjustments, and the 0%/9% rate ladder with AED examples.

taxable income natural person uae

A natural person's taxable income is business revenue for the calendar-year tax period minus deductible business expenses, adjusted for non-deductible items. Deductible expenses must be wholly and exclusively incurred for the business and evidenced. The first AED 375,000 of taxable income is taxed at 0% and the remainder at 9%. Electing Small Business Relief (revenue AED 3 million or less, periods ending by 31 December 2029) treats taxable income as zero.

# The computation, step by step

Step one: total your business revenue for 1 January to 31 December — every invoice, sale, fee, and payout from the business activity. Step two: total deductible business expenses — costs wholly and exclusively incurred to earn that revenue, each supported by evidence.

Step three: adjust. Add back anything non-deductible that slipped into expenses: owner's drawings, personal costs, fines and penalties, and any expense without a business purpose. The result is taxable income.

Step four: apply the rates. The first AED 375,000 of taxable income is taxed at 0%; only the excess is taxed at 9%. A natural person with AED 400,000 of taxable income pays 9% on AED 25,000 — AED 2,250. The 0% band is not a deduction; it is a zero rate on the first slice.

# Revenue: getting the starting number right

Revenue is gross receipts from the business activity in the calendar year — the same figure as the threshold test. Include credit sales invoiced but not yet paid; exclude VAT collected for the FTA and genuine refunds.

For mixed earners, separate business revenue from everything else. Salary, personal investment returns, and gifts never enter the computation. A dedicated business bank account makes this separation automatic; a mixed account makes it a year-end archaeology project.

Unpaid invoices at year-end still count as revenue of the year they were issued. If a client never pays, the bad debt may be deductible later as an expense — but the revenue was still revenue when invoiced. Do not net them off silently.

# Expenses: the wholly-and-exclusively test

An expense is deductible only if incurred wholly and exclusively for the business. A laptop used solely for client work passes; a family holiday labelled 'networking' does not. Dual-purpose costs must be apportioned on a reasonable basis — business share deductible, personal share not.

Common deductible categories for individuals: subcontractor and freelancer fees, materials and stock, software subscriptions, professional licences and permits, marketing and advertising, business travel, a reasonable home-office share, and professional advice fees.

Never deductible: owner's personal drawings, personal living costs, fines and penalties, bribes, and expenses with no evidence. Interest and entertainment have specific limitation rules — do not assume full deductibility without checking the current guidance.

Depreciation and capital costs

Big purchases like equipment are not usually deducted in full when bought. Capital assets are depreciated or amortised under the tax rules, spreading the cost over their useful life. A AED 60,000 camera bought in 2026 gives deductions across several years, not one AED 60,000 hit.

Keep an asset register: what you bought, when, what it cost, and its business use. Small tools and consumables can typically be expensed immediately; the register is for the significant items.

# Adjustments and common errors

The classic error is deducting owner's drawings as salary. As a natural person you cannot pay yourself a deductible salary — drawings are movements of your own money. Related: deducting the full cost of a car that is half personal, or claiming home rent in full when one room is the office.

Another error is missing income: platform payouts not invoiced, cash jobs forgotten, barter unrecorded. The FTA can cross-check bank inflows against declared revenue; unexplained deposits become adjustments with penalties attached.

Provisions and estimates need care. A general 'bad debt provision' of 5% with no named debtors is unlikely to survive scrutiny; specific doubtful debts with collection efforts documented are far stronger. Estimate only where the rules permit, and disclose the basis.

# Losses: when expenses exceed revenue

If deductible expenses exceed revenue, you have a tax loss for the period. Report it on the return — losses are valuable because they can generally be carried forward to offset future taxable income, subject to the loss-relief conditions and limits.

Loss years need the best records, not the worst. The FTA examines losses closely, since every dirham of loss is a future dirham of tax saved. Prove each expense was genuine, business-related, and evidenced.

Note the interaction with Small Business Relief: in a relief year, taxable income is treated as zero and no loss is preserved. If you have a loss year, consider whether electing the relief helps or hurts — usually you would not elect when there is no profit to shelter.

FAQ Answers to the questions people actually ask

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay myself a salary and deduct it?

No. As a natural person you cannot create a deductible salary by paying yourself — owner's drawings are not a business expense. This is one of the structural differences from a company, where director salaries can be deductible. Your reward as an individual owner is the profit itself, taxed once at the personal-business level.

Are start-up costs deductible?

Genuine business expenditure incurred to earn taxable income is generally deductible, including pre-trading costs closely connected with the business, subject to the rules on capital versus revenue expenditure. Keep invoices for everything spent setting up — licences, equipment, initial marketing — and categorise them properly.

How do I handle a year with both profit and personal costs mixed in?

Strip out every personal element before computing taxable income: personal travel, family expenses, the personal share of mixed costs. If the mixing is extensive, reconstruct the year from bank statements line by line. It is tedious once; a separate business account prevents it recurring.

What records prove my expenses?

Supplier invoices or receipts showing what, when, from whom, and how much — plus proof of payment. For apportioned costs, add the written apportionment basis. For stock, the year-end count. Organise by category and calendar year so each return line traces to evidence.

Do I compute taxable income differently if I elect Small Business Relief?

Yes — simpler. When you elect the relief and qualify, taxable income is treated as zero for the period and no detailed computation is needed. You still file the return and make the election; the relief replaces the calculation, it does not sit alongside it.
