# How tutoring income is tested

Private tuition fees, per-session charges, term packages, and online course sales are all business turnover. A tutor charging AED 400 an hour for 25 hours a week earns around AED 480,000 a year — under the threshold. At 50 hours a week or with premium rates, the same tutor crosses AED 1 million.

Package deals need spreading: a AED 30,000 term package covering September to December is turnover across those months, not a lump in September. Consistent timing methods keep the calendar-year test honest.

Group classes and workshops scale turnover fast — twenty students at AED 200 each is AED 4,000 a session. Tutors who add group formats often cross the threshold in the same year they scale. Track per-format revenue so growth never surprises you.

# Coaches: life, business, fitness, and sports

Coaching — executive, life, fitness, sports — follows the same rules: turnover from coaching services tested against AED 1 million. Corporate coaching contracts are often the largest single income line; one AED 600,000 corporate programme plus private clients can cross the line alone.

Fitness coaches with gym affiliations should check how they are paid. A coach invoicing the gym for sessions is conducting business on the invoiced turnover; a coach on the gym's payroll receiving salary is an employee — excluded. The payment mechanics reveal the substance.

Sports academies run by individuals aggregate all of it: term fees, holiday camps, private sessions, merchandise. An academy doing AED 90,000 a month crosses in month twelve — seasonal camp spikes can do it sooner.

# Deductible costs for tutors and coaches

Venue hire, teaching materials, online platform subscriptions and commissions, marketing, and transport between clients are the standard deductions. Platform commissions — the 10–30% taken by tutoring marketplaces — are deductible expenses, but turnover is still the gross amount before commission.

Professional development directly related to the teaching field is deductible: a maths tutor's advanced pedagogy course, a coach's certification renewal. Unrelated personal development is not.

Home teaching space follows the home-office apportionment rules; a dedicated tuition room is apportioned by area and use. Coaches' equipment — training gear, demonstration kits — is capital if durable, expensed if consumable. Keep the asset register for the big items.

# Online courses and digital products

Recorded courses, e-books, and membership sites create scalable turnover — the same content selling while you sleep. A AED 500 course selling 2,500 copies is AED 1.25 million of turnover with no additional teaching hours. Digital scale crosses thresholds silently.

Recognise the income when earned under your consistent method — usually when the sale completes and access is granted. Refunds and chargebacks reduce turnover via credit notes; keep the platform's refund reports.

Production costs — filming, editing, platform fees — are deductible business expenses. The course itself, if it has enduring value, may be treated as an intangible asset; routine updates are expensed. Keep production invoices in the year's file.

# Seasonal patterns and the calendar-year test

Tutoring peaks around exam seasons; coaching dips in summer. The calendar-year test does not care about seasonality — it totals January to December regardless. A tutor earning 70% of income in two terms still tests the full year.

Use the quiet months for admin: reconcile the year's books, prepare the return workings, review the threshold position for next year. September's filing deadline follows the summer lull — a natural moment to close the prior year properly.

If growth is pushing you toward the threshold, the December review is decisive. Know your cumulative turnover before the winter peak, not after. Crossing in December still means registration — there is no partial-year pass.

FAQ Answers to the questions people actually ask

Frequently asked questions

I teach at a school and tutor privately. How am I taxed?

Only on the private tutoring. Your school salary is employment income — excluded from corporate tax and the threshold. Your tutoring turnover is tested against AED 1 million separately. Keep the two income streams in separate accounts from the start.

Do platform commissions reduce my turnover?

No. If students pay AED 100,000 through a platform that keeps 20%, your turnover is AED 100,000 and the AED 20,000 commission is a deductible expense. Report gross, deduct the commission — the threshold sees the gross figure.

Are my certification courses deductible?

Yes, when they maintain or develop skills for your tutoring or coaching business — certification renewals, pedagogy courses, first-aid for sports coaches. Courses for an unrelated new career are personal development, not a business expense.

I run holiday camps. How is that income treated?

Camp fees are business turnover like any teaching income, recognised in the period the camp runs. Aggregate camps with term teaching and private sessions for the threshold test. Seasonal spikes are the classic way tutoring businesses cross AED 1 million unexpectedly.

Can I claim Small Business Relief as a tutor?

Yes, as a natural person, if your tutoring business revenue is AED 3 million or less and the period ends on or before 31 December 2029. Elect it on your return. You still register once over the AED 1 million threshold and still file every year.
