Amended Assessments and Deadlines
When the fta amends its assessment mid-dispute know the rule, count the days correctly, and protect your position.
amended assessment dispute
An amended assessment supersedes the original — and starts a fresh 40-business-day dispute clock from its notification. Read the amendment carefully: what changed, what stayed, and whether the amendment helps or hurts. The dispute strategy may need recalibrating — a reduced assessment may make the remaining dispute uneconomical, or the amendment may introduce new errors to challenge.

# When the FTA amends its assessment mid-dispute: the rule
An amended assessment supersedes the original — and starts a fresh 40-business-day dispute clock from its notification.
Read the amendment carefully: what changed, what stayed, and whether the amendment helps or hurts. The dispute strategy may need recalibrating — a reduced assessment may make the remaining dispute uneconomical, or the amendment may introduce new errors to challenge.
# Counting and managing it
Read the amendment against the original line by line, reframe the grounds to the amended figures, and diary the fresh 40-day window from the amendment's notification. Reassess proportionality — a reduced assessment may not justify the full ladder — and take advice on the interaction with any ongoing objection.
Worked example
Assessment amended 1 October reducing the tax by half: the dispute continues against the amended figures, with a fresh 40 days from 1 October. The grounds are reframed to the amendment — do not keep fighting the superseded numbers.
# If the deadline is missed
Fighting the original assessment after it has been amended is fighting a ghost — the tribunal decides the amended decision. Reframe promptly within the fresh window.

| TDRC objection (Article 32) | 40 business days from notification of the reconsideration decision; tax must be paid in full | Committee decides in 20 business days, notifies in 5 |
| Court appeal (Article 36) | 40 business days from notification of the Committee decision; 50% of penalties secured | Court timetable applies |
# Managing when the FTA amends its assessment mid-dispute: systems and safeguards
Deadlines are a systems problem. For when the fta amends its assessment mid-dispute, build these safeguards — each one cheap, each one proven by the disputes that failed without it:
Prove the start date
Every deadline dispute begins with the same question: when were you notified? Screenshot the EmaraTax notification with its timestamp the day it arrives, save any email or SMS notification alongside it, and log the date in a shared diary — not a personal calendar. An amended assessment supersedes the original — and starts a fresh 40-business-day dispute clock from its notification. Without proof of the start date, every computation that follows is arguable.
Count on a calendar, never in your head
Read the amendment against the original line by line, reframe the grounds to the amended figures, and diary the fresh 40-day window from the amendment's notification. Reassess proportionality — a reduced assessment may not justify the full ladder — and take advice on the interaction with any ongoing objection. Have a second person verify the count independently; two people making the same arithmetic error is far rarer than one. For the worked example above — Assessment amended 1 October reducing the tax by half: the dispute continues against the amended figures, with a fresh 4... — the principle is the same every time: visible, verifiable counting.
Build margin into every deadline
Set reminders at 30, 20, 10, and 3 business days before the computed deadline, and plan the substantive work — not just the filing — against the 10-day mark. Portal outages, bank processing delays, and signatory unavailability all strike on final days, and none of them extends a statutory window. A filing completed early is a filing that cannot be derailed.
Cover for absence
Every deadline needs a named owner and a named backup, with handovers that explicitly list open disputes and their computed deadlines. Deadlines do not pause for leave, resignations, or public holidays — the diary must survive the people. Review all open deadlines weekly while any window is active. When ownership changes, the outgoing owner walks the incoming owner through each open item; a handover email listing the deadlines, with the diary entries attached, takes ten minutes and prevents the most common cause of missed windows.

Frequently asked questions
How are business days counted toward this deadline?
Exclude Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and UAE public holidays; day 1 is the day after notification. Count forward on a calendar, marking each business day, and set the filing target at least a few business days before the computed deadline — a miscounted holiday is the classic way a safe filing becomes a late one.
Should I diary reminders for the deadline?
Yes — set them at 30, 20, 10, and 3 business days before the computed deadline, on two calendars. The 10-day reminder is the action trigger: the filing should be substantially ready by then. Deadline management is unglamorous and it wins more disputes than legal brilliance.
Does the amendment reset the whole dispute ladder?
The amended assessment is a new decision with a fresh 40-day window for review/reconsideration. How it interacts with an ongoing TDRC objection on the original requires case-specific handling — take advice rather than assuming either continuity or restart.
