After Submitting: What Happens Next
Processing, verification queries, payment settlement, and refund timelines — what follows your EmaraTax disclosure submission.
after submitting: what happens next
After submission, the disclosure enters FTA processing, your same-day payment settles against the liability, and any verification timeline begins. Processing time varies with complexity and whether queries arise — complete filings with reconciled figures, legible attachments, and payment made move fastest. Respond to FTA questions promptly from the disclosure file; a complete file usually answers queries in one round. Refund positions proceed through separate refund verification.

# What the rules say
After submission, three things happen in parallel: the disclosure enters FTA processing, the payment you made (same day, always) settles against the liability, and the clock starts on any FTA verification. Processing times vary with complexity and whether the file is selected for queries. Respond to any FTA question promptly and from the disclosure file — a complete file answers most queries in one round. If the disclosure creates a refund position, it proceeds through the refund verification timeline, which runs separately.
# How to handle it in practice
Keep the post-filing file for five years: the discovery memo, original versus corrected figures, the reconciliation, source documents, the EmaraTax reference number, and proof of payment. The file is your defence if the same period is ever questioned again and your evidence in any later reconsideration. A disclosure is not finished when the portal says submitted — it is finished when the file is complete and the payment has landed.
# Filing the disclosure in EmaraTax: the steps in order
Voluntary disclosures are filed inside EmaraTax, the FTA's online portal — there is no paper route. Menu labels in the portal change over time, so treat the exact button names below as a guide and follow what the portal shows on the day; the sequence and the information required do not change.
# The five-year window behind every disclosure
Errors do not expire quickly. Tax records must be kept for five years after the end of the relevant tax period, and the FTA's assessment powers run on a similar horizon — longer where evasion is suspected. Practically, this means a voluntary disclosure should sweep every affected period inside the window, not just the most recent one: correcting 2025 while leaving the same 2023 error in place invites the FTA to find the older one itself, at which point the voluntary route is closed for that period. When you discover an error, ask whether the same mistake happened in earlier periods before you file — one complete disclosure covering all affected periods is cheaper and safer than a drip-feed of corrections.

Frequently asked questions
How do you respond to an FTA query on your disclosure?
From the disclosure file: cite the reconciliation, the source documents, and the workings already prepared. Answer precisely what was asked, promptly, without volunteering unrelated matters. A complete original filing makes most queries answerable in a single response. Respond to any verification query from the disclosure file within days; the response speed is the variable you control.
Where do you file a voluntary disclosure in the UAE?
In EmaraTax, the FTA's online portal — there is no paper or email route. Log in, select the correct taxable person, open the voluntary disclosure form, complete the tax type, periods, and corrected figures, attach documents, submit, and save the reference number. Pay any difference the same day.
What information does the voluntary disclosure form ask for?
The tax type, the affected tax periods, and the corrected figures for each affected field — entered as corrected values, not just differences — plus supporting attachments and the formal declaration. Have the reconciliation workings finished before you start typing; the portal is the last place to do arithmetic.
What documents should you attach to the disclosure?
The reconciliation between original and corrected figures, source documents for the error type (invoices, contracts, bank statements, customs declarations), and the discovery memo recording the awareness date. Files must be legible and within the portal's size and format limits, with descriptive names.
What is the most common EmaraTax disclosure mistake?
Selecting the wrong taxable person or TRN — common in groups — followed by figures that do not reconcile and illegible attachments. Verify the entity before starting, reconcile before typing, and scan documents properly. A rejection does not pause the 20-day clock, so get it right first time.
Can you amend a submitted voluntary disclosure?
A submitted disclosure that turns out to contain a new error may itself need a further disclosure — there is no casual edit button for a formal filing. This is why pre-submission checking matters so much. Take professional advice before filing a second corrective disclosure on the same matter.
How long does FTA processing take?
It varies with the disclosure's size, complexity, and whether verification queries arise. Complete filings — reconciled figures, legible attachments, payment made — move fastest because they avoid the back-and-forth that causes most delays. There is no published service standard to rely on; file early in the window regardless.
Do you need a tax agent to file in EmaraTax?
Not legally — the taxable person can file directly — but professional preparation is advisable for multi-period, multi-entity, or technically complex corrections. An FTA-registered tax agent files on your behalf; the declaration and legal responsibility remain yours. Sweep every affected period in the one filing — the error class always repeats, and partial scope is an incomplete disclosure.
What if the portal rejects your attachment?
Check size, format, and legibility, then re-upload — oversized scans and phone photos are the usual causes. Keep the 20-day deadline in view: a rejected attachment does not extend the window, so prepare compliant files before you start the form, not during.
