Corporate Tax Registration Cost in Abu Dhabi: Free at the FTA, Costly When Late

Corporate tax registration in Abu Dhabi is free with the FTA. See how your ADDED licence record feeds EmaraTax and why late registration costs AED 10,000.

corporate tax registration cost abu dhabi

Corporate tax registration in Abu Dhabi costs nothing at the Federal Tax Authority. Registration on EmaraTax is free, and the same free process applies in every emirate. The real Abu Dhabi cost is a penalty, not a fee: registering late carries a fixed AED 10,000 penalty. What decides whether you register cleanly is your ADDED licence record, issued through TAMM, because that record is what EmaraTax expects your application to match.

# Registration Is Free in Abu Dhabi, as Everywhere in the UAE

Corporate tax registration costs nothing in Abu Dhabi, because it costs nothing anywhere in the UAE. The Federal Tax Authority charges no fee for registration, EmaraTax is free to use, and deregistration is free as well. State that plainly at the start, because it is the true answer to this search: there is no Abu Dhabi registration tariff, no emirate surcharge and no government charge to budget for. Our corporate tax registration service and our corporate tax registration cost page for the UAE both work from the same position.

So where does money enter the picture at all? In two places only. The first is a professional fee, if you choose to have an adviser prepare and submit the application rather than filing it yourself. The second, and the one this page concentrates on, is the penalty for missing the deadline. In Abu Dhabi, registration cost is really deadline risk, and deadline risk is driven by your licence.

# Your ADDED Licence Record Is What Feeds EmaraTax

An Abu Dhabi mainland licence is issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, ADDED, and businesses deal with it through TAMM, the emirate's government services portal. That licence record is not just a trading permission. It is the source document your EmaraTax application is built from and checked against: legal name, licence number, activities, issue date and authorised signatory all travel from the ADDED record into the tax registration.

That makes data mismatch the characteristic Abu Dhabi failure mode. A trade name amended at TAMM but not yet reissued, an activity added after the licence printed, a signatory whose details differ between the licence and his identification documents: each one stalls the application or sends it back for correction while your deadline keeps running. Our EmaraTax corporate tax registration guide walks through the application itself. The Abu Dhabi lesson sits before you open it: reconcile the TAMM record first, because EmaraTax will.

# Tajer Abu Dhabi and Dual-Licence Holders Register Once

Abu Dhabi deliberately made entry easy with Tajer Abu Dhabi, the licence route that lets entrepreneurs start without premises. Tajer holders sometimes assume a light licence means a light tax duty. It does not. A Tajer licence is a full ADDED licence, the company behind it is a taxable person, and it registers for corporate tax on the same three-month clock as any other Abu Dhabi company.

Dual licensing creates the opposite mistake. An entrepreneur who holds both a Tajer Abu Dhabi licence and a conventional mainland licence, or a mainland licence alongside an ADGM entity used for a different business, can assume each licence needs its own registration. For licences held by the same taxable person, it does not: one person registers once and lists its licences on that single registration. Two registrations for one person create a duplicate record that later blocks returns and deregistration. If your Abu Dhabi structure spans several licences, our tax consultant in Abu Dhabi page covers how the pieces are handled together.

# The Deadline Runs Three Months From Your Licence Date

Under FTA Decision 3 of 2024, a juridical person must register for corporate tax within three months of its licence being issued. In Abu Dhabi that clock starts on the issue date printed on your ADDED licence, and it runs whether or not you have started trading, opened a bank account or signed a customer. A licence taken out to hold a name, reserve an activity or prepare a launch starts the same clock as a licence that trades from day one.

Free zone licences in the emirate, including KEZAD, Masdar City and ADGM licences, run on the same rule against their own issuing authorities' licence dates. The practical consequence is simple: the registration date belongs in the same diary as the licence itself. Companies that treat registration as a task for their first accountant, hired months later, discover the deadline from the penalty notice instead.

# What to Check Before You Submit on EmaraTax

Most failed Abu Dhabi applications fail on data, not eligibility. Run the checks in the table before you submit. They take minutes against the TAMM record, and each one removes a correction cycle with the Federal Tax Authority, where a returned application consumes deadline you may not have.

Have the documents behind the data ready as clean scans: the current licence, the memorandum or formation documents, and identification for owners and the authorised signatory. EmaraTax asks for the people behind the company as well as the company itself, and a registration submitted with an expired identification document or an unsigned authorisation invites the same delay as a wrong licence number.

# The Cost of Getting Abu Dhabi Registration Wrong

Register late in Abu Dhabi and the cost is exact: a fixed AED 10,000 penalty under the federal penalty regime, set out in full in our guide to the late registration penalty for corporate tax. The current waiver initiative softens that blow where the first corporate tax return is filed within seven months of the end of the first tax period, in which case the late registration penalty is cancelled. Treat the waiver as a safety net with a condition attached, not as an extension: miss the first-return condition and the AED 10,000 stands.

Registration errors carry quieter costs too. A registration built on a mismatched licence record produces a tax record that disagrees with your licence at every later touchpoint: VAT registration, bank compliance reviews, and the first return itself. In Abu Dhabi the cheapest registration is the free one submitted once, on time, against a TAMM record you checked first.

FAQAnswers to the questions people actually ask

Frequently asked questions

Does the FTA charge a fee for corporate tax registration in Abu Dhabi?

No. The Federal Tax Authority charges nothing for corporate tax registration, and EmaraTax is free to use. You may pay a professional to prepare and submit the application for you, and that service fee is separate, but there is no government registration fee in Abu Dhabi or any other emirate. Anyone presenting an FTA registration charge as a government fee is misleading you.

What is the corporate tax registration deadline in Abu Dhabi?

Three months from the date your licence is issued, under FTA Decision 3 of 2024. The clock runs from the licence date shown on your ADDED licence, not from when you start trading, open a bank account or issue your first invoice. A company licensed in Abu Dhabi that registers in month four is already late and already owes the AED 10,000 penalty, subject to the waiver initiative.

Why would my EmaraTax registration be rejected or delayed?

EmaraTax is checked against your licence data, and mismatches in the legal name, licence number, activity or authorised signatory are the most common reason Abu Dhabi applications stall or return for correction. The licence data originates with ADDED through TAMM, so fix the source first: correct the record at TAMM, let the licence reissue, then submit the tax registration against the corrected data.

I hold a Tajer Abu Dhabi licence and a mainland licence. Do I register twice?

Yes, once. A taxable person registers once, and a dual-licence holder is one taxable person holding two licences, not two taxpayers. Both licences belong in the same registration, and the same rule covers a Tajer Abu Dhabi holder who later adds a conventional licence. Registering twice creates a duplicate record that must be unwound, so list every Abu Dhabi licence on the single application.

What does late corporate tax registration cost in Abu Dhabi?

The penalty is a fixed AED 10,000. Under the current waiver initiative, that late registration penalty is cancelled if you file your first corporate tax return within seven months of the end of your first tax period, without a separate application. The waiver forgives the penalty; it does not change your registration date or your filing obligations, so register now and protect the waiver by filing on time.

Which Abu Dhabi businesses must register for corporate tax?

Every juridical person incorporated in Abu Dhabi must register, including free zone companies in KEZAD, Masdar City and ADGM, and branches of foreign companies. Expecting the 0% rate as a Qualifying Free Zone Person does not remove the duty; the relief applies after registration, to qualifying income only. Natural persons register only when their business turnover crosses the federal threshold for individuals.
