Forgot to claim your VAT refund at the UAE airport: what now?
Forgot to claim your tourist VAT refund in the UAE? What the 90-day, 6-hour and one-year rules mean, and fixes for lost tags and missed cash counters.
forgot to claim vat refund at dubai airport
If you left the UAE without validating your tax-free purchases, your tourist VAT refund is normally lost, because validation at the point of exit within 90 days of the invoice date is a condition of the scheme. Planet's guidance says the one way back is to return to the UAE within those 90 days and validate the goods when you leave again. As of October 2026 these rules sit in FTA Decision No. 2 of 2018, as amended.
- Validation deadline
- 90 days from invoice date
- Departure after validating
- Within 6 hours
- Claim after validation
- Within 1 year

# Why validation is the step you cannot skip
If you did validate but did not collect the money, you have one year from validation to claim, and a missed cash counter can be switched to a card refund.
The Tax Refund for Tourists Scheme refunds VAT because the goods leave the UAE. Validation is how that export is proven. Under the scheme set up by Cabinet Decision No. 41 of 2018 and run under FTA Decision No. 2 of 2018, a tourist must present the original passport or GCC ID, the goods and the tax-free purchase record at a Planet validation point when leaving the UAE.
The FTA's service page sets three time limits:
- Validate within 90 days of the tax invoice date.
- Depart within 6 hours of completing validation, or the approval is cancelled.
- Request the refund within one year of validation.
Missing validation is different from missing the claim. If you never validated, there is no proof of export, and a tag that is not validated within 90 days expires. If you did validate, the refund is still yours to claim for a year, even if you left without collecting it. Work out which of the two happened before you contact anyone.
# You left without validating
This is the hardest case. Validation must happen at the point of exit, so it cannot be completed online from abroad after you have gone. Planet's tourist guidance offers one route: if you return to the UAE within 90 days of the purchase, you can validate the purchases at the exit point when you leave on that later trip. You must have the goods, the original invoices and the same passport or GCC ID used at the time of purchase.
If you will not be back within the 90 days, the tag expires and the VAT cannot be claimed. There is no appeal route described in the FTA's or Planet's published guidance for a tourist who simply forgot, and the retailer cannot refund the VAT itself once the sale was recorded as tax-free.
Some situations look similar but are treated differently:
- Goods sent as cargo are not eligible, according to Planet, because they did not leave with you.
- Goods used in the UAE before departure, such as clothes worn or electronics opened and used, may be refused at inspection because consumed goods are excluded.
# You validated but did not get the money
If the purchases were validated and you left on time, the refund is recorded and can still be claimed within one year of validation. Common cases:
- You missed the cash counter. Cash is paid by a partner counter, generally after immigration. Planet says a traveller who misses it can claim by card through the online Shopper Portal instead.
- The card refund has not arrived. The FTA page says card refunds usually arrive within 9 calendar days, in the card's currency at the issuer's exchange rate. After that, check with your card issuer first, then contact Planet.
- Your flight was delayed past 6 hours. The approval is cancelled if you do not depart within 6 hours of validation. Planet's guidance is to tell staff on your rescheduled departure so the purchases can be re-validated.
Cash refunds are capped at AED 35,000. Larger refunds must go to a card or a supported digital wallet. The FTA page lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB and UnionPay cards, and WeChat Pay and Alipay as wallets.
# Lost tags, receipts and failed invoices
Many UAE retailers now issue paperless digital tax-free transactions, so losing a paper receipt is not always fatal. Planet's guidance points tourists to the Shopper Portal, reached through the SMS link sent at purchase or the QR code on the tag, where registered purchases can be checked.
- Transaction missing from the portal: go back to the store, or contact the merchant, before you leave the UAE.
- Paper invoice failed verification: the FTA page says this must be fixed with the store before departure.
- Name on the invoice does not match your passport: ask the store to correct it. Only the registered document holder can validate.
The safest habit is to check the portal the evening before you fly. Problems that can be solved in a shop in ten minutes may be impossible to solve at the airport, and none of them can be solved from abroad.
# How to avoid it next time
A short checklist prevents almost every lost refund:
- Confirm the store is registered with Planet before paying. Planet warns that purchases from unregistered merchants cannot be refunded.
- Spend at least AED 250 per transaction and give the passport or GCC ID you entered with.
- Keep the goods unused and in your hand luggage if possible, because you may be asked to show them.
- Validate before checking in your bags, or at a mall or hotel kiosk within 24 hours of a flight if you hold an online boarding pass.
- Leave within 6 hours of validating.
Expect less than the full 5% back. The FTA page states that 13% of the requested VAT is deducted plus AED 3.60 per transaction, the fixed amount set by FTA Decision No. 11 of 2026. UAE residents should note that none of this applies to them: the scheme is limited to overseas tourists, as our tourist VAT refund guide explains.
# Who to contact and what to have ready
The scheme is operated for the FTA by Planet, so refund questions go to Planet rather than to the retailer or the FTA. The FTA's service page lists Planet's tourist support at Tourists@planetpayment.com and +971 4 586 4700, with live chat available. Planet's FAQ gives phone hours of 9am to midnight UAE time.
Before you write, gather:
- the passport or GCC ID number used at purchase;
- the tax invoices or tag numbers, or screenshots from the Shopper Portal;
- your departure date, port and flight or booking reference;
- proof of validation, if you validated, and the refund method you chose.
Be precise about which problem you have: not validated, validated but unpaid, or validated and refused. Each has a different answer, and only the second can usually be fixed from abroad.

If you did not validate, the refund is normally lost. Planet says you can validate on a later departure only if you return to the UAE within 90 days of the purchase.
