How long does VAT registration take in the UAE?
The FTA processes a complete VAT registration in 20 business days. What starts and pauses the clock, sample timeline, and how to protect the 30-day deadline.

As of October 2026, the Federal Tax Authority states that it processes a VAT registration application within 20 business days of receiving a complete application. Preparing and submitting the form on EmaraTax takes about 45 minutes and there is no fee. The clock effectively restarts if the FTA asks for more information, so incomplete documents are the main cause of delay.

# The official timeline
The processing time does not extend your own deadline: a business that crosses the AED 375,000 mandatory threshold must apply within 30 days, and the registration takes effect from the date the obligation arose, not the approval date.
The FTA's VAT Registration service page sets the standard: 20 business days to process a completed application, counted from when the FTA receives it in complete form. Business days exclude weekends and UAE public holidays, so 20 business days is roughly four calendar weeks, longer over Eid or national holidays.
The same page states that:
- the service runs on EmaraTax, available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with access through UAE Pass;
- preparing and submitting the application takes about 45 minutes;
- there is no fee for VAT registration;
- on approval, a Tax Registration Number (TRN) is issued and the VAT registration certificate appears in the EmaraTax dashboard.
The key word in the standard is completed. An application missing a document, or one where the turnover declaration does not match the evidence, is not complete. When the FTA raises a query, the application moves to a status requesting more information and the timeline depends on how fast and how fully you respond.
# What makes registration take longer
Most delays come from the applicant's file, not the FTA. The documents the FTA lists for VAT registration include:
- the trade licence and any branch licences;
- incorporation documents such as the memorandum of association or partnership agreement;
- Emirates ID and passport copies of owners and authorised signatories, with a power of attorney where required;
- a signed and stamped declaration of total taxable supplies, with monthly sales since establishment;
- evidence supporting the turnover figures, such as invoices, contracts or purchase orders, and for expected revenue, signed contracts or orders;
- customs details where you import or export.
Files must be in PDF, each up to 15 MB. Common reasons for a query are a turnover declaration that does not reconcile to the invoices, missing signatory authority, licence details that differ from the application, and unclear business activity descriptions. Non-resident applications and voluntary registrations based on expenses also tend to need more evidence. Our page on VAT registration delays covers each cause and the fix.
# A realistic timeline, step by step
Assume a mainland trading company finds it crossed the AED 375,000 threshold at the end of a month. A sensible plan runs as follows:
- Days 1 to 5: confirm the threshold calculation for the past 12 months, collect licences, signatory documents and supporting invoices, and prepare the monthly sales declaration.
- Day 6: create or update the EmaraTax taxable person profile and submit the VAT application. Save the application reference.
- Day 6 onwards: check the EmaraTax dashboard every few business days and answer any query the same week.
- About 20 business days after a complete file: the TRN is issued and the certificate is available to download.
The important dates in that plan are the 30-day deadline, which is met by submission, and the effective date, which the FTA sets by reference to when you became liable. Approval arriving later does not move either of them. Track progress with our guide to tracking a VAT registration application.
# Your 30-day deadline does not wait for the FTA
Processing time and your legal deadline are separate. A business must apply within 30 days of becoming required to register, which happens when taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 over the previous 12 months, or are expected to exceed it in the next 30 days. The FTA service page confirms that late applications attract a penalty, which is set in Cabinet Decision No. 40 of 2017, as amended.
For mandatory registration, the effective date is generally the date the obligation arose. That means VAT is due on supplies made from that date even while the application is under review. While waiting for the TRN, keep records of every supply, price contracts so that VAT can be added, and be ready to account for output tax from the effective date in your first return.
Voluntary registration works differently. A business with taxable supplies, imports or taxable expenses above AED 187,500 may apply, and there is no late-registration exposure. The effective date follows the application. See our page on the VAT registration effective date for how each date is set.
# Non-residents and other cases that take longer
The 20-business-day standard applies to every VAT registration, but some applicants should plan for more time because their files are harder to evidence:
- Non-resident businesses. The FTA service page states that a non-resident making taxable supplies in the UAE must register regardless of the value of those supplies, unless another person in the UAE is responsible for the VAT. Foreign incorporation documents and signatory papers often need extra checking.
- Voluntary registration on expenses. Where the application relies on taxable expenses rather than sales, the FTA asks for at least five VAT invoices supporting the figure, plus evidence that the business intends to make taxable supplies.
- Clubs, charities, associations and government entities must add documents specific to their form, such as the founding decree for a government body.
In each case, start earlier and assume at least one round of questions. For non-residents, see our guide to non-resident VAT registration.
# How to get the TRN faster
You cannot buy faster processing, but you can avoid restarting the clock:
- Submit a consistent file. Names, licence numbers, activities and addresses should match across the licence, the EmaraTax profile and the application.
- Reconcile the turnover declaration to the supporting invoices before uploading, and explain any one-off items.
- Upload clear PDFs within the size limit, one document per field where possible.
- Check signatory authority. If the signatory is not named in the licence or memorandum, attach the power of attorney.
- Respond to queries fully the first time. A partial answer often leads to a second query.
- Name one owner for the application who checks the dashboard and email regularly.
If the 20 business days have passed after a complete submission and nothing has moved, raise an enquiry with the FTA through its official channels and quote the application reference. Keep evidence of the submission date, because it is the proof that your 30-day deadline was met.

Frequently asked questions
How long does VAT registration take in the UAE?
The FTA states it processes a complete VAT registration application within 20 business days of receiving it. Queries for more information extend this.
Is there a fee for VAT registration in the UAE?
No. The FTA's service page states that VAT registration is free of charge.
Does a slow FTA approval make my registration late?
No, the 30-day deadline is met by submitting the application on time. VAT is still due from the effective date, even before the TRN arrives.
What happens after VAT registration is approved?
The FTA issues a TRN and the VAT registration certificate appears in your EmaraTax dashboard, ready to download.
What documents does the FTA ask for with a VAT registration application?
The trade licence and any branch licences; incorporation documents such as the memorandum of association or partnership agreement; Emirates ID and passport copies of owners and authorised signatories, with a power of attorney where required; a signed and stamped declaration of total taxable supplies with monthly sales; evidence supporting the turnover figures, such as invoices or contracts; and customs details if you import or export. Files must be PDF, each up to 15 MB.
Does the 20 business day processing time also apply to voluntary registration?
Yes. The 20-business-day standard applies to every VAT registration, including voluntary registration by a business whose taxable supplies, imports or taxable expenses exceed AED 187,500. Voluntary applications based on expenses should support the figure with at least five VAT invoices, and there is no late-registration exposure on a voluntary application.
