What the FTA Does After You File Your Corporate Tax Return
Filed your UAE corporate tax return? Learn what the FTA checks, when enquiries and audits follow, and how assessments are issued.

After you file, the FTA's systems validate the return, cross-check it against your registration, prior periods and third-party data, and risk-score it for review. Most returns pass without contact. Where the risk scoring or a specific issue triggers attention, the FTA opens an enquiry or tax audit, requesting information and records through EmaraTax correspondence. If the review finds the position incorrect, the Authority issues a tax assessment for the additional tax plus penalties.

# Automated checks and risk scoring
Every return passes through automated validation: arithmetic, completeness of required sections, reconciliation of the return to attached accounts, and consistency with the registration data such as the tax periods and entity type. Simple errors, like a return filed against the wrong period or figures that do not tie to the attachments, are caught here and generate correspondence.
Beyond validation, the FTA risk-scores returns using the data it holds: sector benchmarks, prior period patterns, related-party disclosures, relief claims and third-party information. A return with large related-party transactions and no transfer pricing disclosure, or a free zone return claiming 0% on all income, scores differently from a plain domestic return. The scoring is not published, but the logic is unsurprising: complexity and claims attract attention.
What raises the risk score
Big year-on-year swings without explanation, persistent losses in a profitable sector, large relief claims, related-party intensity, and inconsistencies between the return and other data the FTA holds. None of these is wrongdoing; they are simply what a risk engine notices.
# Enquiries, audits and information requests
An enquiry typically starts with a written request for information through the EmaraTax inbox: specific questions, a document list, and a deadline. It may focus on one issue, such as a relief claim, or broaden into a full tax audit of the period. Audits can involve meetings, site visits and extensive record requests, and the FTA has statutory powers to require information and documents.
Handle every contact with the same discipline: acknowledge promptly, diary the deadline, gather exactly what was asked for with supporting context, and respond through the proper channel by the deadline. If the deadline cannot be met, request an extension before it expires with reasons, rather than missing it. Engage a qualified adviser at the first sign of an audit, because early missteps in an audit are hard to undo.
| Contact | What it means | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Validation query | Automated check failed | Correct and resubmit promptly |
| Information request | Specific issue under review | Full response by the deadline |
| Tax audit | Period under detailed examination | Adviser-led, organised disclosure |
| Assessment | FTA's determination of liability | Pay or object within the time limit |
# Assessments and what follows
If the review concludes the return understated the liability, the FTA issues a tax assessment for the additional tax, with penalties applied under the administrative penalty framework. The assessment states the basis and the payment deadline, and the taxpayer has objection rights within the statutory time limits. Paying the assessed tax while objecting to penalties, or vice versa, needs careful handling with advice.
An assessment for one period often triggers review of adjacent periods, so use the experience to check the current period's position before it is filed. And whatever the outcome, fix the underlying cause: assessments repeat where the process that produced the error is left unchanged.
# What the data tells the FTA before it contacts you
Long before any human reviews your return, the FTA's systems have assembled a picture: your registration history, every return filed, the pattern of your figures across periods, your sector's benchmarks, and third-party data from banks, licensing authorities and other government sources. Inconsistencies between these sources generate the queries. A return showing declining revenue while the licence was expanded, or profits inconsistent with the VAT turnover, is flagged by arithmetic, not by suspicion.
This means the best defence against review is consistency across every data source the FTA holds. File accurately, keep the registration current, and ensure the story told to the licensing authority, the bank and the FTA is the same story. Businesses are rarely selected at random; they are selected because something in the data did not reconcile.
Third-party data
Assume the FTA can see your licensing data, your VAT filings, and relevant banking and customs information. Reconcile the corporate tax return to these sources before filing; unexplained differences are the most common trigger for enquiries.
Amending proactively
If you spot an inconsistency after filing, amend before the FTA asks about it. A voluntary correction prompted by your own review is viewed entirely differently from a correction extracted under enquiry.

Frequently asked questions
How long after filing can the FTA open an enquiry?
The law provides time limits for assessments, but you should assume any filed period can be reviewed within the statutory window. Keep the seven-year records complete for every period, because an enquiry into an older period is only manageable if the filing pack still exists.
Will I be told if my return was accepted without review?
Not necessarily. Many returns simply pass through the system with no contact, which in practice means no enquiry was opened. Do not treat silence as formal clearance; it means the period was not selected for review, and the records must still be kept.
Can the FTA change my return without asking me?
The FTA issues assessments through the formal process with reasons and objection rights; it does not silently rewrite filed returns. If you disagree with an assessment, the objection and appeal framework is the route, with strict time limits that must be diaried immediately.
